Nice to see old ( sylvestris) in Urbi贸n mountains, ,

In Spain, we have too many young trees and too few old trees!

I didn't expect that the most surviving species after the volcano ( Is) would be the tree ( caria)! Their canopy (in green) emerge from ashes (most tree is below the ashes). in the background is not as healthy as the fig tree!.
About 1.5 years after the eruption

In it is not very common to have of >1000 ha at 1500-1900 m altitude. An example from last summer is the fire at Boca-de-Huergano (, ). Much of the fire affected a young plantation of (not native to the area; not sure why it was planted!) and . Betula individuals are now .

Here's an NZ observation I made today for ANZAC Day.

It's a Turkish Red Pine, a descendant from Gallipoli of the famous Lone Pine. It was planted in Akaroa in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.

You can read more about the Battle of Lone Pine here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_o

The is a bit high in South Georgia. Keep in mind the pollen you see here, mostly Longleaf ( palustris) isn't the pollen driving your allergies crazy, that is mostly done right now by hardwood trees and grasses which have microscopic pollen.

Intraspecific variability of in banksiana

Rear-edge populations (with low frequency) are less serotinous & more variably than range-core pops where serotiny is more uniformly high, by Pelletier et al
besjournals.onlinelibrary.wile

That is, results for Pinus banksiana (boreal) are quite similar to those for P. halepensis & P. pinaster (mediterranean species).

Estimating the age of & their is tricky, as they often produce more than 1 whorl per year!

Pic: halepensis. From the bottom upwards: 馃數arrows: 1st whorl of a growing season;馃敶&馃煝arrows: 2nd & 3rd whorl of the same year. Note the in the left pic.

not always have straight trunk! Sometimes you find some individuals with funny shapes (right), but the one I found yesterday was exceptional (left), with a 360 degrees loop! What would make this tree to do that loop? Have you ever seen acrobatic trees like this?

(they both are in a burnt forest, my "preferred" system 馃榾 )

selects sexual in pines! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

Populations of halepensis (a ), subjected to higher frequency of crown fires (short fire interval) produce cones at younger ages than those pops that rarely

Being precocious in fireprone environments is adaptive because it increases the probability of having a significant seed bank for regeneration when the next fire arrives
