I’m a #twitter escapee and #reddit defector who has been lurking on the #fediverse for a while now.

Live and work in #NYC where I teach #art and spend most days #writing and #making stuff. Been #vegan since the late 90s, #linux and #foss guy for over 20 years, am the creator of the #PirateBox, and I used to live in a 30-foot school bus.

Also, pretty sure I’m the only faculty member at NYU to own a tractor (it’s a long story).

#PirateBox tests now commencing on hardware!

Got a donated Raspberry Pi 4 (please note the keyword: *donated*!), set up an Armbian card, and installed Calibre and Emby on it! Both work on my home network!

I still have to create some kind of landing portal so people who hop onto the Pi via a mesh network can access these features, as well as a chat server, easily!

I might try RocketChat, unless someone has a suggestion of something better?

Testing Emby out as a server... running it in a VM with simple port forwarding enabled so I can access it from my host. So far it's promising to work well, and I can move onto my next step.

This is all part of my #PirateBox project.

Doing some testbed runs for my Pirate Box project. The initial phase is through a VM, to explore the software and see how it works. Emby is functioning as a media server, and Calibre is function as an ebook library. The first part is localhost servers, then serving to outside the VM. My next step will be testing on some SBCs, then once I'm satisfied, I'll put the whole thing into a portable case/cyberdeck.

Today's news has pushed me to finally make this a reality... RonDeSantis has pushed for even more book banning in Florida, which will basically get to the level of "no books at att" if it passes:

If books will be banned that hard, then I want to do something to counter that.

One thing I want to do is the Pirate Box. Basically have an off-grid, mesh networked SBC I can carry around, with banned books, movies, music, guides, software, you name it... come in, fire up the Box, everyone connects to it and gets materials needed.

The other part is a server people can access online, with the same materials. I know it may sound redundant, but having the materials both offline and on means it's always going to be accessible, some way or another.

Sneakernet is back. We are the data runners now.

One project I wanna build before DEF CON is a Pirate Box. There was a project to make a ready-to-use stack for Raspberry Pis, but it's been inactive as of late.

However, I came across this article written by @hydroponictrash, which is giving me another inspiration on how to make a pirate box and have it working off-grid:

So now it's a matter of finding the necessary parts and putting them together into a small carrying case, effectively making both a #cyberdeck and a #piratebox that I can carry around, powered by rechargable battery banks, and when powered on, will be able to serve out books, music, movies, and other goods on an off-grid mesh network.

If anyone wants to help, I'm in need of the following items:

* Battery banks
* Travel router
* Small display, 7" to 10", with HDMI input
* Portable SSDs
* Any good SBC; Raspberry Pis or another SBC will work

With the shit we’re seeing in Texas and Florida around limiting access to information via schools and libraries I was reminded of things like #Piratebox and #Librarybox and how something like that may be more important now than ever.

Sadly, things like “ssl everywhere” have made it hard for these “autonomous info systems” to work easily with common devices.

That sucks; I wonder what I can do about this?

"When online is offline" - a brief description of how a #PirateBox device works.

I think I need to start thinking more about my capacity to do computing in an offline manner. I find myself depending too much on the Internet for almost everything I do in a day. Perhaps #ZIM is a good start.
