“Mr. Ravitch’s office is now empty, too. His absence is a stark reminder that New York’s post-Covid recovery needs new generations of people who are as physically anchored to a city as he was, and who understand that urban civics depends on people in business, finance, politics, policy and media just showing up, day after day, to make a little unglamorous progress.”

@walk_sydney Great idea. You should take this up with Transport for NSW. These bikes - which I've often seen just lying on the pavement - also present a serious hazard to people with vision impairments and an obstacle for people in wheelchairs, parents with prams, etc.

Going through some old . Back in 2012 I thought it might be interesting to take a picture of this stalled luxury hotel development in and compare it to when it was finally built. It still looks a lot like this today in 2023.

Was at the ribbon cutting earlier this morning for the changes at the 5th & Missouri MetroLink station in East St. Louis. Concrete replaced with entice plants, shade structure & benches added, graphics & way finding.

This is such a lovely idea - using a and festival to destigmatise areas which have fallen into disrepair, and using temporary installations to help bring about permanent change.

For example, one has used a simple intervention (bird and bat boxes) seen the return of local wildlife to a park, making it feel safer and more welcoming <3

This is not to be missed!! Mark Lakeman is fantastic. A huge contributor to the city happiness factor of . for the homeless, etc etc etc. He's an expert in and principles.

His research regarding use of the Grid in city layouts as an authoritarian control pattern is fascinating.

There are 5 opportunities to see him in the coming week. I highly recommend you commit to one.

People with limited means should have Beautiful, welcoming places to get together with their families and for their children to have a chance to play outdoors.

The Paris NON vote to “micromobility” is another lesson about the urban sidewalk “revolution” Segway promised — that humans don’t need techno solutions for sidewalks… we need less cars in cities, we need car-free cities.

Sunday Streets for 2023

Only two of the large traditional routes - the Mission/Valencia one on July 30 and the Excelsior one on October 15 as part of the new "Phoenix Day," with smaller block parties around the City.

The rest of the Sunday Streets calendar will consist only of small closures - no long one on Folsom in Soma or on Fillmore and Fulton in the Western Addition, etc.

Public space is essential for democracy and collective wellbeing, a resource that in national crises becomes the stage and the substance of struggle, negotiation, and ultimately healing.

As someone involved in City planning and placemaking, I think about stuff like this (and "aging in place") a lot.

I've been reflecting on where I used to hang out as a teen, with friends in particular, growing up here in San Francisco....
