@lobocode I think there just hasn't been enough effort put into it except for in research or educational settings due to its unknown benefit in relation to cost (effort, time, money). It may be similar to compare the Linux monolithic kernel to a hypothetical microkernel

@publicvoit I've had the same concerns about #Wayland - lack of #Xorg x-forwarding is unattractive to me.

After some research on the problem, I found Waypipe provides similar functionality for Wayland: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mstoeckl/waypipe

As an aside, I really hope #Arcan gains more traction. It has it's own take on networked GUI that reminds me of #Plan9. Seems like a better evolutionary path for the Linux desktop, IMHO. Also, it's in Nixpkgs! https://github.com/letoram/arcan

I'm a lil buzzed from day drinking. But...#OpenVMS is now my 2nd favorite OS. After IRIX. NOTHING can compare to IRIX. It is the most advanced, mature, pretty UNIX there is. But OpenVMS is quite nice. I've been abusing logicals which makes VMS sooo much nicer to work with. You can tell the #plan9 guys took a cute from VMS because DECnet behaves like 9p. Especially in a cluster.

I feel like every year that I do the #plan9 bootcamp at #SDF I learn a little more about operating system design and #systems #programming than I do #9front itself - this feels like a good year for me to focus on #glenda and see what she really has to offer us in a distributed computing world

So today's agenda is to get DECwindows working in OpenVMS. After seeing all @thedaemon 's lovely #plan9 screenshots I'm going to see if I can make DECwindows pretty :D #openvms is starting to be in my top 5 favorite operating systems. Maybe even my top 3. It's so powerful and just rock solid. Uptime is calculated in decades. It won't let you do anything that could compromise it. It will, but you have to work for it :p

My dp9ik pam module has been merged in to nixpkgs. Your NixOS box can now authenticate against your 9front box with just a couple lines of nix. #nixos #plan9 #9front

I am Ștefan (ș as sh, I also accept Stephan or the equivalent in your language). I’m 21 years old, ♑, he/him, proud #leftist and soon to graduate CS @ UVABc. Sort of proudly living in #romania. My native language is Romanian, fairly proficient at English, slowly learning #finnish (and #italian).

Tried a lot of programming languages in my childhood up until now, a non-chronological list of ones that stuck with me for one reason or another being: VB6 (that’s what I started on at 8 years old), #pascal (+ #freepascal and #delphi), #perl (+ #raku), #tcl #tcltk, #lisp (usually #scheme, on a good day #elisp #emacslisp and #commonlisp), #elixir, #php, #forth, #lua, #oberon, #modula-2, #cpp #c++, #ocaml, #fsharp, #smalltalk (+ #squeak #pharo #self), #ada, #powershell, #dart, #matlab, #rlang, #zig, #nim, #cobol and #julia. I don’t claim full proficiency in all of these, but I’m familiar enough with these (+ some others not mentioned here) that I could get along just fine with 2 weeks at most of studying and looking through cookbooks and examples). I’m flexible in learning new languages and technologies if needed.

I also do #sudoku and #math for fun (especially functional equations and number theory problems, sometimes calculus and geometric algebra). I am interested in #linguists, #conlangs (#lojban and #esperanto) and #nlp, contemporary (post-‘45, usually post-‘89 for me) history, #balkan history, lower-level stuff (I like to learn about how tools around me work, I’m most interested in #compilers, #emulators and #microcontrollers), #typography and #latex, #linux + #bsd, #msdos, #amiga, #oberon, #plan9, #philosophy, #astronomy (especially in a worldbuilding context) and #philosophy, along with other less notable interests.

I engage in #politics relatively often irl, although I’m not inserting it in absolutely every scenario in my life. As I mentioned, I’m a #leftist and #progressive (or… um… #woke) (Nazis and fascists can have a merry fuck off, DNI with me). I am also a spiritual person, a #deist (if you really want to put it that way, an agnostic, although it’s not quite true) and I find #astrology and #tarot interesting (I’ll let you guess my moon and ascendant, let’s see how close you are).

With that being said, I hope I’m welcome here, you can pick your subset of things that interest you from this list, you have plenty of options. :P Quite a bit longer than last time, but oh well…

Okay. It's 2:30am. Time for an energy drink and stalk #facebook. #openvms is a kick in the balls!! I have a VM on my ZBook and on my server to play with DECnet. I've heard there is a hobbyist DECnet WAN thing that sounds interesting. I like how you can interact with remote systems with DCL. It's very #plan9 esque. I can see why it dominated for so long.
