Sci-Fi 5: A Close Call with US19720810 – August 10, 1972
The "great daylight fireball" was a hunk of space rock that came dangerously close to the Earth on August 10, 1972. How accurate are those movies that imagine what would happen if one slammed into our home planet? Hear what the science says about science fiction and on Sci-Fi 5. sci-fi-5.libsyn.com/a-close-ca

AKBELEN FOREST DEFENSE

Turkish villagers have been sprayed with tear gas while attempting to protect the Akbelen Forest from being cleared for coal strip mining this week, campaigners say.

For two years, locals from the Muğla region have kept a constant watch over 780 acres of woodland where Turkish company YK Energy is seeking to expand its coal mine.

Despite an ongoing lawsuit over the site near İkizköy town, forestry clearance workers moved in on Monday 24 July, leading to days of fierce clashes between protesters and police.

Qs: could rings form?
Qs: what to hit next?

A: material may have got stuck in the system leading to a long-lasting tail. As for next targets: top priority is a search telescope, more kinetic impactors to be decided

"These β values indicate that significantly more momentum was transferred to Dimorphos from the escaping impact ejecta than was incident with DART. Therefore, the DART kinetic impact was highly effective in deflecting the asteroid Dimorphos"

At @NASA@twitter.com we have dedicated teams who watch the skies to make sure we are safe from hazardous asteroids.

Today's asteroid flyby is one of the closest ever recorded, but our  experts have been tracking the asteroid and know it's not a threat to Earth. twitter.com/asteroidwatch/stat

Jupiter needs to get it's shit together.

DO YOUR FUCKING JOB, JUPITER! You're slippin.

Stopping 99.99999% of the extinction asteroids doesn't cut it.

Didn’t smart people once claim there was “zero risk” that Trump would ever get elected?

Just sayin’.

"Rubble-pile" asteroids are far more common than we thought, and destroying them may be effectively impossible. Call in the nukes.

As Edward Teller once pointed out, nuking asteroids is actually the most effective way to avoid an impact, and the only way to do so without much advance warning. The catch? To instantly vaporize an object 1 kilometer across you need a *1 gigaton* warhead. 👀

Painting is of the Chicxulub impact by Donald E. Davis for NASA.
