#plannedobsolecence is a choice the software and at times hardware manufacturer makes.

My (and all ) Chromebook has not decreased in capability, but Google - Chrome is demanding more functionality.

It is a choice to not update drivers. it is a choice to add bloated (ok, "non core") functions to what the machine was originally capable of doing.

Like others have noted, there are OS alternatives that can be used to keep this Chromebook and others from becoming more electronic waste.

Re phones, there is one aspect in the "bands" (frequencies) that are being added that old phones likely do not support. That is unfortunate but a changing mobile network reality.
