I've been experimenting with #solardyeing this summer.
The latest skeins have just dried. The green one was dyed with weigela florida flowers on bleached wool yarn. The purple one was dyed with logwood in the 3. draw on handspun local wool yarn. Both yarns were mordanted with alum.

My husband Ashley has agreed we can start using the plant dyed, handspun and handwoven woollen blanket he finished making in late 2021. The squares are woven on a pin loom he made himself and then stitched together. The multicoloured fringe is from the leftover yarns. Almost all of the dyes are from plants we've grown ourselves. There's just a dash of cochineal for purples which we swapped for indigo seeds with a fellow dye enthusiast. #handcraft #naturaldye #handspun #PlantDyeing

Making a wreath from plants in the garden for Yule is almost a ritual for me. Not too concerned about the quality, more important is the process and being open to whatever our little urban garden can provide. This year has been so mild there were fat rosebuds which had somehow survived last week's deep cold. This year the wreath has a core made of the red stems of broad leaf Japanese indigo (maruba). #solstice #PlantDyeing

Thinking about this experiment in natural dyeing / eco printing today. I’ve grown coreopsis tinctoria from seed the past couple of years and it’s so prolific! Finally tried dyeing with it this year and what a process that was. It made me think about how rich and #interdisciplinary a learning experience built around plant dye could be. Lots to learn about chemistry, materials, design, and biology. #CreativeLearning #Gardening #plantDyeing #ecoprint #HandsOnLearning

It’s been quite an adventure evolving to using plant dyed yarns this year! To celebrate this, I’ve written an article “Slow Dyeing with Woad” on my website. 💙x
