@officehippy omg. This almost feels worse than outright rejecting nature altogether. How many people have with pot plants, believing they're doing the right thing? Probably the same people who use pesticides on their plants & chemical cleaners on their lawns. And I bet sales of plastic grass also increase because of that display, completely undermining any positives which otherwise would have been gained. Ugh.

There could be incentives to promote environmentally friendly gardening (although I'm not sure about council tax as so much of this is needed for essential services). I've always thought the UK government should bring in a form of planning permission for gardens if owners want to put down plastic grass, pave over for cars etc...Banning plastic grass would also obviously be a step in the right direction.

"Campaigners are petitioning the government to introduce a tax on artificial lawns "in order to act as a deterrent and encourage land owners towards less damaging and more sustainable options"."

"One of the campaigners calling for the tax, Charlotte Howard, says plastic grass 'kills anything in the soil beneath'."

"Professor Pfautsch is one of a group of scientists now working on a comprehensive assessment of the pros and cons of its widespread use in Australia."

"For one thing, he says plastic grass certainly needs water, "new hybrid materials need watering to maintain the real turf in between the artificial one. So, the argument of water savings is out of the window."

"I have measurements of surface temperatures of synthetic turf near 100 °C. And it can be a burn hazard if unshaded, even when your ambient air temperature is below 30 °C."
