One of my kids, when they were little, used to play with plasticine in their room for hours and hours. ā€œDad Iā€™m going to my room to play clay!ā€ Every inch of their desk was covered with characters and the accompanying vehicles, tools and weapons required for this world they had built. While one shape could be a fully-formed, detailed figure and another might be a simple tiny pinched roll of grey that represented a sword, all shapes were extensively catalogued and categorized and had a specific purpose which might not be immediately apparent to the casual observer. Epic storylines played out as character dialogue and sound effects came out of their bedroom. As their supply of plasticine in individual colourful pieces gradually became one homogeneous mound of grey mud, birthdays or Christmas would bring new fresh packs of unspoiled bright bars. The plasticine, in lumps, mounds and small spheres rolled by small fingers inevitably made its way to the wool carpet outside the bedroom, hitching a ride on the bottom of an eight year-oldā€™s slipper. Iā€™d sigh as I saw yet another smear of oily colour mushed into the rows and fibers of the carpet, despite my reminders to be careful not to track it all over the house. Early attempts to remove the spots were soon abandoned as they became futile.
The kidsā€™ rooms are small home offices now, the claymaker is 21 years-old and 6 hours away at school, the desk and clay and slippers are long gone. The spots remain in the carpet, I pass them everyday. Depending on my day, they are either a quick happy memory or a deeper reminder that stings a bit: a happy time that isnā€™t here anymore. But Iā€™ll never clean the carpet.
