“Instagram [...] helps connect and promote a vast network of accounts openly devoted to the commission and purchase of underage-sex content, according to investigations by The Wall Street Journal and researchers at Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Pedophiles have long used the internet, but unlike the forums and file-transfer services that cater to people who have interest in illicit content, Instagram doesn’t merely host these activities. Its algorithms promote them.”

"The pandemic lockdowns accelerated this process, as bossware made the leap from the low-waged, precarious Black women who were trapped by Arise’s predatory home call-centers to all kinds of white-collar workers who were told they were working from home, but who were really living at work."

"as leftists, we feel that every cent that stays with the platform — particularly every cent that gets turned into profit and paid out to shareholders in dividends, for their invaluable contribution of Having Had Money Once — is a theft from the people doing the work, people who are earning less than minimum wage while peeing in bottles and falling asleep at the wheel."

Lyka specifically targeted the Philippines for their pilot run because their platform would only work with low-income earners. It has been suspended and is poised to expand in Malaysia and Indonesia. Users and merchants in the Philippines are left with "GEMs" they cannot encash.

This is a brilliant critique of the political economy and business lifecycle of big tech/platforms from @pluralistic
https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-platforms-cory-doctorow/
Really love the term "enshittification". So what is it?
"This is enshittification: Surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit. From mobile app stores to Steam, from Facebook to Twitter, this is the enshittification lifecycle."
And later, how such platforms and their self-proclaimed geniuses and masters of the world go about social engineering:
" ... what if there is no underlying logic? Or, more to the point, what if the logic shifts based on the platform's priorities? If you go down to the midway at your county fair, you'll spot some poor sucker walking around all day with a giant teddy bear that they won by throwing three balls in a peach basket. The peach-basket is a rigged game... No one wins a giant teddy bear unless the carny wants them to win it. Why did the carny let the sucker win the giant teddy bear? So that he'd carry it around all day, convincing other suckers to put down five bucks for their chance to win one."
Wherever you stand in the current state-of-the-art AI proclamations (chatGPT etc., etc.,) which seems to be where these big techs are headed and leading us, and you can call me a pessimist, I see a similar lifecycle for them as well.
Why? Because this is the only way to extract and generate value in platform capitalism.

#Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

Please open this and watch it when you can give it a full 15 minutes.
This vid, by @bennjordan, is a brilliantly articulated and crucially important explanation of not just #Spotify’s appalling business model, but frankly what #PlatformCapitalism is doing more broadly.
As I’ve written elsewhere, #capitalism is eating itself. This model cannot survive, and will not survive very long.
Our task, as I put it in #LivingDemocracy, is to seed the alternatives, create the space for other alternatives to follow us, withdraw our consent from existing structures (like f$€king Spotify), and start to institutionalise the new way of doing things.
You up for that? Watch this video, even if only to see why musicians like myself cannot stand Spotify and use it with gritted teeth coz it’s so hard not to.

“A new lawsuit accuses Facebook [...] of monetizing the viral potential of hate and violence in conflict-torn Ethiopia [...] It also alleges the company does not devote enough resources to content moderation on the continent.”
The Ethiopian professor Abrham Meareg, whose father was killed as a result of incitement that spread on the Facebook, says: “Facebook knows the platform is used for genocide, ethnic cleansing, extrajudicial killings. And intentionally, due to their deliberate dismissal of the consequences and harm, they just prefer to focus on their profit-making.”
