There is a way can get himself out of the hole he has dug, stop losing money and protect free speech at the same time. He definitely won't do it though, because it would require him to admit he made a mistake.

The solution is as proposed by @ntnsndr - give bird site users the opportunity to collectively buy and own the company as a , and then democratically govern it as a utility.

You've raised a valid concern. You're right that there's no simple solution to providing the Global South with user-respecting digital tech. But I don't think it's any more ethical to support them being datafarmed forever by corporate platforms. I think the strategy of the movement is probably the most viable long term solution. In the early days of electrification, creating co-ops is how relatively poor, rural people in the UD provided themselves with power lines.

I was just looking up prices for hosting a Mastodon server on masto.host (from $6/month) and I saw that they're so flooded with new customers they've had to close new registrations while they catch up. Now I'm wondering what it would take to set up a similar hosting service as a based in Aotearoa, with onshore hosting options.

All producers/supply chain links get better prices by doing bad stuff (externalising costs).

So we end up with loads of bad things happening in production of our food/stuff & the whole system incent

I really like Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Brings people very close to production. Gives better understanding
Specially interested where people are involved in governance

I'm involved (slowely) starting up a CSA collaborative production of food
