One of my first steps in the process of establishing Bridge St hosting co-op will be to set up a newsletter on SubStack. Our newsletter will offer timely and accurate news on the evolution of the fediverse and other user-respecting, decentralised tech, and all articles will be free to read. But anyone who values the service, and can afford to give us a paid subscription, will be helping to fund the bootstrapping of the co-op.

And now we turn to #PlatformCooperatives. Again, inspiring stuff and points to how we might enact the ideas and plan from the #dyffrynogwen #ClimateAssembly https://open.spotify.com/episode/4nQEhL26aBH3rsR9rlaDlY?si=Zn5P0C0IQCCpqZH6MFQzUA&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A5JuVhmMoZLBWfeoel8Ahk4

seems like #platformcooperatives are having a marketing moment -
culture success?
hey #socialcoop - as new #activitypub apps are built we have an opportunity to suggest tools for features that promote cooperation.

@freeschool For me, models like #PlatformCooperatives (eg meet.coop) and #SocialEnterprises (eg @snikket_im ), are a way of hacking "business" to serve our needs for economic sustainability in the short-medium term. In the long term, I believe we need to develop a #SolidarityEconomy that can replace extractive capitalism. But those models, as well as helping to sustain our work in the short term, can be part of organizing towards that longer term goal. (5/5)

What about having other sustainable revenue models? Platform cooperatives, social enterprises etc. Maybe web 1.0 got corporatized because donation-based services run by unpaid hobbyists can't keep up with platforms using VC money to pay fulltime salaries to staff?

If we want to mainstream decentralized online services, we need ways to separate the work of running a service node (eg a fediverse instance) from running the hosting infrastructure ("the server"). The founders of Sandstorm were on the right track. Maybe what they were missing was platform co-op structures to run the underlying hosting and make sure they at least cover their upstream costs?

Meet.coop were advertising for a fulltime marketing lead in July:

@astrojuanlu I agree with you on both points. 1) becomes more achievable when there is sufficient funding for dev work, which is more likely with 2) is in place. The platform cooperative movement is actively working on addressing both points.

Mel Conway, author of Conway's Law, put together a nice thread that I think is a strong argument for #DataCooperatives and #PlatformCooperatives

> "Every so often there will be a burst of Twitter conversations on the “Reverse Conway Manoeuver” and related topics.
I find this encouraging, but not for a reason you might suspect.
...
Of course we don’t have the foggiest idea how to go about doing this. (Or how to obtain support to do it.)"

@cartographer
* reality of job not addressed at early stages: Rather than training physics students only in Plan B skills for becoming "bricks in the wall" [2] exacerbating the #ClimateEmergency, better would be to also provide knowledge of existing successful ethical commercial structures, such as #PlatformCooperatives [3] for students with software skills; + background knowledge on alternative economic structures (different to capitalism/communism), such as parecon [4]
#climateemergency #platformcooperatives
I found this useful. Of course the bit at the end on platform coops and other commons-type approaches needs to be expanded.
