At some point infantry and drones will come in. It’s modern warfare. Still deciding on variants of weapons and simulating lighter and heavier stuff. But first things first…testing essential assumptions. It’s also statistics and hit curves. For the moment 2d6, everybody has those dice.

For the moment I have three gravs already generated. Need to work on conventional armor later on for a true combined arms, and the rules, so far, fit in one page. Yup, lacking some things like artillery templates. The Uragan should have a template, it’s not a direct fire weapon.

But this is how you play test stuff. Start with a skeleton, see if assumptions work, and add to it.

To the Battletech crowd, since it’s the correct scale…the really old ones, imagine an Archer with a 4-6-4 movement. Since ranges are “more realistic” but I still want to keep this on a table, all is in cm. The mechs are convenient stand ins for gravs. So yes, they have verticality.

I have a shitload of epic, same essential scale, will use some of them for conventional armor stand ins, with micro armor. We have those too.

Playtesting in the wild? One of the most fun thing I implemented lately on the game was a „kiosk mode“. Brings me to the next idea: playtesting in the wild with strangers. Just bring your own beamer.

Post-playtesting AAR:

- My core mechanic is shit but works well with a few minor tweaks.
- No one used the metacurrency mechanic, meaning it's overrated or sorely underemphasised
- Revamped character sheet is more intuitive, simplified core mechanic too (even if it doesn't work)
- Players liked the setting
- Full-auto mechanics shred

Overall, a useful session. I think I can fix most of the major stuff with very little effort. #

Gradually getting back on the twin bicycles of board game design and blogging... I've made some progress on a cooperative game design that has been troubling me on and off for quite a while, and I think I am finally starting to see some strengths as well as problems...

Five years of existence may seem long, but honestly, our wiki is even more of a long shot.

Apart from access to 🎶 🎲 , important aims are:
1) Let new people hear about this exciting area of creativity.
2) Provide some connectivity for those into the topic.

...and we need that, because...

From the birdsite, something from a while back that gave me a big change of perspective today. Now I see it expressed in words, it feels like this is pretty obvious, but I just hadn't thought in these terms before.

So yeah, when you are playtesting, it's good to find problems and all that, but finding that golden heart of a game, that's the real win.

I actually managed to get a full prototype to the table today for a two-player game, with an actual, real, other person. Obviously there are problems with the game, but I now know a lot more about them and have some ideas of how to progress. Feels like getting back in the saddle again.

I've just been looking at a small, soloable game for a friend, seeing if I can play it "blind" or "cold" from the rulebook. Turns out I can't.

This is not a criticism of the friend's work, more a reminder of just how much of the rules we, as designers, hold in our heads and what assumptions we make.

I can now feed back a list of questions which my friend may feel have obvious answers, but weren't obvious to me. 🙂

Supplies are gathered, time to make a very ugly prototype and actually start testing this game as a whole thing!

Pulling all the ideas out of a notebook and making it a physical thing has long been a big mental hurdle for me. Becoming real makes failure more imminent so I tend to avoid it.

I'm committed to actually finishing this one though, unlike the last two left abandoned.

So. Much. Cutting.
