At the end of the session last night, I couldn't resist pointing at M45, the Pleiades cluster, which was very present to the left of Jupiter. A single 300sec... we can already see the blue nebulosities... autumn is coming, this target is on my to-do list, I can't wait! #Astrodon #Astronomy #M45 #pleiades

I love it when a student asks questions! Today during office hours I got to recommend websites for Qur'an, Tafsir, and historical geography (including #Pleiades, the World Historical Gazetteer, and my own #HIMME : https://medievalmideast.org )!
How to measure snow depth with ICESat-2 ?!
Combine ICESat-2 ATL06 snow-on elevation with snow-off elevation from airborne lidar or satellite photogrammetry #Pléiades @cnes !

Today in New Zealand is the second observance of the new public holiday for Matariki. This is cool for a number of reasons:
1) It celebrates the new year as traditionally observed by Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand
2) The legislation introducing it was bilingual in English and Te Reo Maori. (Although Te Reo is an official language of NZ, along with English and NZ Sign Language, it's not common for legislation to be bilingual)
3) Matariki is tied to a lunar calendar, which makes it a movable feast on the solar/Gregorian calendar. Like Easter it has an astronomical definition (the first rising of Matariki [Pleiades] above the horizon in the last quarter of the moon in the first month of the lunar year) but for convenience there are published tables of dates, which recall medieval computus tables.

The #Pleiades also known as The Seven Sisters, Messier 45 and other names by different cultures, is an asterism and an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars in the north-west of the constellation Taurus. At a distance of about 444 light years, it is among the nearest star clusters to Earth. #astrophotography (imaged with Skywatcher 72ED refractor and ZWO Asi533mc camera, at bortle 3 site, description from Wikipedia)

Highlights from twilight.
Two-day old Friday crescent moon sits higher in the sky than yesterday, so the detail is sharper, and the sky is darker.
Some cirrus adds a glow around the crescent, but not so much cirrus to prevent the Pleiades from showing up in late twilight.

Astrophotography challenge for Friday evening, 21 April, northern hemisphere, in twilight.
The young crescent moon will be below the Pleaides.
A telephoto lens will capture this nicely in portrait orientation.

The planet #Venus is still near the #Pleiades this evening, and minutes ago I finally had the opportunity to catch the pair with a #BridgeCamera from my balcony: 3.2 seconds at f/2.8 and ISO 800, with a focal length equivalent to 400 mm for 35 mm film.

See the planet #Venus glide past not one but two star clusters this month. Look west at dusk and find bright Venus high in the sky. Then, with binoculars, look on either side of it. To the right (in mid-northern latitudes) is the #Pleiades star cluster, which appears like a tiny Big Dipper. To the left is the #Hyades star cluster marked most notably by the bright orange star #Aldebaran. The cyan line with points/dates marks its location each night through the 20th.
