It’s a #lostbones #FossilFriday! 🐂🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟 This remarkable mammoth 🦷 has an even more remarkable story! Housed at the Interstate Park Ice Age Interpretive Center in Taylors Falls, WI - the tooth originated in #Minnesota.

It was discovered in 1987 by a heavy equipment operator excavating gravel from a Gray Cloud Island gravel deposit ~125 feet below the original surface!

The collection was found during road work near Hgwy(s) 169 & 494 in Southern Hennepin County.

We spent the last week with Dr. Katy Smith from the Georgia Southern Museum examining Pacific mastodon remains in the collections of the Natural History Museum of LA County, San Diego Museum of Natural History, Rancho La Brea Tarpits, and @westernsciencecenter. Here Katy, with Brittney Stoneburg, and Brett Dooley from WSC, examine the “Little Lady” in the WSC collection, one of the only known female Pacific mastodon skulls.

#Minnesota #lostbones for #FossilFriday! 🐂🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟 This mammoth tooth, a partial tusk, a bison jaw, and a mastodon tooth can all be seen at the Houston Nature Center.

All were found in Houston County, which is in the Midwest’s glacial “Driftless Area”. An area, which includes a portion of southeastern Minnesota, that was never covered by ice during the last ice age.

Today on our way to Oregon Brett and I drove through the Coso Volcanic Field in Inyo County, California. Found in Miles City, Montana, this partial Columbian mammoth femur is housed at the Pipestone County Museum. It is currently not on display but a partial tusk and jaw from the same Montana doner are. More to come on those!

It’s #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦥🐃 🐘 🐴🐪🐟🍃There are no documented Pleistocene-age horse specimens in Minnesota. The small size of this m3 tooth has me hopeful. It's about 25mm in length across the crown.

Found by a friend on a river gravel bar it will be donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota for further study.
