Yes, it will run on a VPS, and there are companies who will do that for you. Mastodon itself can be resource intensive but there are less demanding alternatives such as @firefish and #pleroma or #akkoma

Man darf halt nicht vergessen dass die noch in Testphase sind. Ich sehe auch null Grund dahin zu wechseln finde es aber gut wenn die dann in Public sind und #activitypub unterstützt wird. Extra-features (disabled by default) is somewhat confusing in #Fedilab.

But softwares like #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #GlitchSocial, #FireFish don't support (currently) same features.

We plan to use #NodeInfo to automatically enable features depending on the user's instance (ie: software).

For example, I can reply here from Mastodon (from #Friendica #Pleroma etc. it also works) and also make posts in Lemmy communities (by tagging the community account).

Even though I've been on #Mastodon for the better part of a year now, there are still aspects of the #Fediverse that I just don't understand. For example, out of curiosity, I joined a #Pleroma instance. Even though I should be able to follow my Pleroma account from Mastodon, Mastodon apparently can't "see" it. However, Pleroma "sees" my Mastodon account. Throwing this out there to see if someone can explain it to me in layman's terms. Thanks in advance!

Ich war viele Jahre komplett ohne Social Media. Vor vielen Jahren hatte ich einen Facebook Account. Den habe ich irgendwann gelöscht weil der FB Algorithmus es schafft das schlechteste in mir zum Vorschein zu bringen. Vor einiger Zeit dann zu Twitter. Sobald klar war dass Musk übernimmt habe ich das Konto zur Löschung eingestellt. Seitdem Mastodon.
