In the library of the #NaturalHistoryMuseum is The Natural History (Latin: Naturalis Historia) by Pliny the Elder - "My subject is the world of nature ... or in other words, life,"

This volume is from the second edition, printed in 1472 (approx 1,400 years after it was compiled). Bound in pig skin it’s incredibly fragile BUT what a book!

My friend and grad school colleague Steve Tuck (professor of classics and history at Miami University) was here for the event Ohio State held in honour of Steve Tracy, and Steve Tuck made me aware of the recent book by another colleague from graduate school, Pedar Foss (professor of classical studies at DePauw University) dealing with Pliny the Younger's description of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE....('toot' thread continues)

This is the oldest natural history book in the museum. It is the ‘Historia Naturalis’, written by Gaius Plinius Secundus, or Pliny the Elder. It was published in 1469!!

The grey bindings are brass, and if you look close you can see black dots. These are pig hair follicles! The binding is pig skin. It was the first publication to cover all areas of natural history (zoology, botany, geography, mineralogy, human physiology, metallurgy). The book itself is a work of art.
