No, not #Iceland... Nice #columnar #basalt in #lava flow of #Plio-Pleistocene age along the #Allier river. #geology. It is covering a famous site of late #Pliocene mammals. Including.... #Mastodon !!!

I looked up what life was like the last time the Earth had this much CO2 in the atmosphere. Oh boy, are you going to love what I found out.

After Blanchetown I finally made it to Morgan. I investigated an old abandoned quarry I was told had fossils in it. I found this bank of pure oyster shells. This is the classic North West Bend Formation, these oysters grew in the same Pliocene estuary as those Fellasters I didn't find.

And here it is. Sands that were laid down in the Pliocene as the sea retreated from the Murray Valley. Sadly I could not find any fossils here. #pliocene #fossils #fieldgeology Oh well, many miles to go I must press on.

And we have a fantastic artistic reconstruction by Simone GIovanardi.

I used to use Lisiecki's reconstruction from 2010 for #CO2 https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/study/15695 but at one point, I found Yamamoto a better fit. IIRC, it was because Yamamoto's CO2 declines gradually from 400ky on, after the interglacial "MIS 11" which I investigated in some depth as best analog for our climate today,
while Lisiecki's CO2 drops abruptly at 380ky. A comparison of both and the strong differences can be seen here https://nitter.nl/pic/orig/media%2FFTv1cyRX0AMoND4.jpg
Lisiecki is the queen of paleo reconstruction, I think, so it seems appropriate to explain why I don't refer to her CO2. I also replaced her d18O versions with others, eg. Starr 2020 and Lawrence 2009 for South and North Atlantic respectively. And recently I found a new age model that better fitted some quirky #pliocene sealevel events I was investigating, compared to Lisiecki's age model "LR04" which is the "age bible" for #paleoclimate, I gather. But I haven't tried yet to see if I can make it work (Hatfield https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2021GC009677 )

Researchers have created a map of oceanic "dead zones" that existed during the #Pliocene epoch, when the Earth's climate was two to three degrees warmer than it is now. The work could provide a glimpse into the locations and potential impacts of future low oxygen zones in a warmer Earth's #oceans. #ClimateChange

Combo #FieldPhotoFriday and #faultfriday - a surface of one of the strands of the Soda-Avawatz fault zone in the eastern Soda Mountains north of Baker, CA. The striations show almost perfectly horizontal right-lateral strike slip motion. The fault cuts a probable #Pliocene alluvial deposit and is buried by a middle #Pleistocene alluvial fan deposit. This is one of several fault systems cutting across the Mojave Desert that is related to Pacific-North American plate boundary slip.

These show my stepson and I searching large spoil piles at a construction site in #Florida's Bone Valley Formation.
The piles shown are entirely #Miocene and #Pliocene fossils - mostly seashells, along with some corals, shark teeth, and cetacean bone bits. These piles were 10m high in some places and quite unstable - caution was required.
We found some really nice specimens.

Super interesting paper in #Nature on using #environmental #DNA, the DNA that is taken from environmental samples like air, water, Earth, etc, to reconstruct the #ecosystem of late #Pliocene to early #Pleistocene #Greenland.
The mean temperatures found are 11-19 degrees above today's averages. In fact, this is a window into our #Global #Warming future, without the incredible #Mastodons and other #fauna and #flora of the time!!

This is where we hunt for fossils. Our favorite spot is the Peace River. It cuts through #Miocene, #Pliocene, and #Pleistocene deposits. You can find a wide variety of #fossils, from #mammoth tusks to #megalodon teeth.
We kayak a few miles away from civilization and have a shovel and screen picnic. It's a great way to enjoy #nature, get some exercise, and find some interesting fossils.
