Opinion piece at #PLOS Global #PublicHealth

Who is a public health expert?
-Expertise is not limited to medical or health professionals
-Expertise is not limited to academia or high-income nations
"The current understanding of global health expertise is reflective of embedded elements of residual colonialism that considered white individuals as the only experts."

Why quantifying Openness matters
Open Science Indicators (OSI) are a new source of information on #OpenScience practices .... Produced in partnership with DataSeer, they use Natural Language Processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and measure Open Science practices in all PLOS articles, and in a comparator set of similar #OA research articles. The dataset begins in January 2019, and is updated quarterly.

"Inclusivity and equity are core to a strong foundation of Open Science, and we need to hear from all perspectives in order to make science, the process of publishing science, and the solutions science inspires, more robust. *PLOS Mental Health* and *PLOS Complex Systems* will strive to represent research from local experts around the world, and from across various disciplines."

Highly cited papers can be published in any journal. When looking for a tool to reverse-complement sequencing results, I discovered the paper describing SeqKit (2016). Cited more than 900 times and the software is still actively maintained:

Conversations about predatory publishing rarely seem to include non-controversial control groups, or compare groups of similar size/scope.

Update. I think the Lancet is wrong to assume that new funder #openaccess policies will be #gold more often than #green. But either way, it's right to waive or discount APCs when authors can't find funding from their funder or employer.
Next: Like #PLOS and others, it should investigate no-APC publishing for all authors, not just those with economic hardship.
BTW, how often do authors pay APCs out of pocket?
