@rlcj Wonderful. And prompted nostalgia. My father was a farmer in #Lincolnshire. After he had ploughed he'd make me walk the land with him (as a six year old I was not convinced about this) to look at and admire the texture and smell of the freshly turned soil. Then he'd take me to the embankment above our low-lying #fen fields to admire his straight #plough lines.

How lovely: 'God spede the #plough, & sende us korne enow' - even the #oxen look happy (though the ploughmen less so), and we’re suddenly in the room, sometime in the 1370s, with the #medieval illustrator working on his frontispiece for William Langland's #poem, 'The Vision of Piers Plowman'.

Broad #medieval #plough ridges, each rising up between separating furrows, run up a slope close to Wimpole Hall, Cambs. They formed part of a larger enclosure for a #deer #park in 1302 and haven't been ploughed since then. The park survives today, now part of an enlarged 17thC one, though grazed by cattle rather than deer.
I get so much delight from this kind of quiet, unbtrusive evidence for the #history of individuals and communities in the #landscape.
