(3/n) From the database development side, all of this could be done trivially, e.g., with something #PLSQL -ish and/or triggers. It'd be a bit ugly, but it's doable. The problem here is that it's really not portable! Databases like #Postgres and #MySQL treat app logic as part of the stored data, while #SQLite just doesn't support (ii) and (iv) in the first place.

Does anyone here know, am I supposed to use indexes in Oracle Exadata, or does the auto-magic storage index usually work well enough?

We’re querying the tables over a db link from a regular Oracle DB, so all I really know is that our queries are slow on a table that’s only about 6 million rows, and I need to figure out what to ask for from the DBA…

I love that Oracle has these very specific syntax diagrams for SQL and PL/SQL constructs but the PL/SQL compiler isn't written with the same level of strictness.

Perfect example is the JSON_OBJECTAGG SQL function documented here: https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/21/sqlrf/JSON_OBJECTAGG.html#GUID-09422D4A-936C-4D38-9991-C64101283D98

You can see that the "KEY" keyword is optional but "VALUE" is not. Except the compiler also accepts "IS" instead of "VALUE" and I literally cannot find a single place that this is documented (and also how on earth did the person who wrote the code figure it out?).

Also interesting to note that the SQLDeveloper IDE's local syntax checking marks it as bad, but once you send it off to the compiler on an actual Oracle instance, the error goes away. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*Finally* got around to running the #Oracle #database Hierarchical Profiler (DBMS_HPROF) this week to confirm my suspicion of why my #PLSQL code is running slower than expected.

A majority of the slowness can be attributed to any one of 3 coding style decisions.

2 styles are known to be slow. 1 of which is my liberal use of Regular Expressions.

The 3rd one? A surprise. I only had a small tingle in my Spidey Sense that this was slow.

It's always nice to have proof of why something is slow.

Today I enabled automatic formatting of #PLSQL and #SQL code for another Git repo via pre-commit hook. The formatter:off and formatter:on marker comments are also kind of TODO markers for corner cases.

Really looking back at that list, it hasn’t been that many that I’ve used extensively. Have just gone deep in the ones used most. Either with different frameworks or functionality.

no matter how you slice it, #plsql is still just so primitive. When my class concludes I'll leave my #infiniteloop unresolved. To be exact, I wanted to write an #array but made a mistake in doing a #cursor. lol
