7/x But of course #Iroko has, in fact, been logged extensively for many years, since early colonial days - it was promoted energetically by the colonial forest department as a durable hard wood & became one of Nigeria's 5 most popular timber exports.

So this is a good example of how, in practice, you often have a plurality of different ways of relating to trees or animals in one place - the environnmental anthropologist Brian Morris wrote about this kind of #Pluralism, to me really important.

#Kuhn’s 3rd lecture at #UCL in 1987 seems to argue against pedagogical #pluralism or even a true historical approach. Whilst that may work for natural sciences I am less convinced for the humanities where pluralism can be a strength rather than a distraction: a useful reminder to escape from an overly formalised model-land. The choice of #model may favour tractability over other equally valid criteria.

The Media Pluralism Monitor 2023 results show an overall deterioration of #media pluralism across Europe and a continuous rise in online abuse of #journalists, often from the political elite. Via @EFJEurope

@jamessmithies Yes, I understand. But I'm not sure Escobar's notion of the pluriversal can be aligned too easily with a political liberal #pluralism. Rather, Escobar's:

"‘pluriversal politics itself involves an entanglement of forms, inhabiting a spectrum from the radically relational to the modernist liberal...’ (Pluriversal Politics, 2020: xvii). Escobar positions ‘many activists and groups’, for example, as moving ‘in and out of’ the three kinds of politics he outlines: ‘standard biopolitical liberal forms… such as those of most neoliberal governments’ (xv); ‘political strategies and designs for social justice’ associated with ‘human rights (including gender, sexual, and ethnic diversity), environmental justice, the reduction of inequality, direct alliances with social movements’ (xvi); and ‘pluriversal politics proper, or political strategies and designs for pluriversal transitions’ (xvi)."

If you're wondering what I mean by #digitalpluralism I'm not entirely sure yet (!) but my sense is that #pluralism might allow us to align political liberalism with the digital technical stacks / platforms we use.

The possibility of vertical alignment between politics and technology is perhaps utopian, but worth exploring.
