Taking the long way down the mountain through an old growth hemlock forest. The trees here are immense, 150+feet high. Footsteps are muffled by the forest duff and it’s nearly silent except for woodpeckers tapping away.

First image: mountain ash, Sorbus sitchensis, in its fall color already. 2 and 3: when a hemlock tree rots away, the cores from its branches are left behind like fossils.

Image 1: ancient hemlocks with the peak behind. Everything here is ancient and takes forever to grow. Image 2: the suspension bridge is out in place every July by the park service and taken down in September. The rest of the year the torrent coming off the glacier is too wide to cross. 3: the historic fire lookout of Oark Butte, a popular view point. 4: view of Baker Peak from the fire lookout.

First two images: pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) forms large blankets in the rocky parts of the meadows. It’s a kind of aster or daisy. Second two images are purple monkey flower (Mimulus lewisii), another wildflower that’s viable in the garden.

Corn lily on the left (Veratrum viride) looming a bit tattered this late in the season. On the right: does anyone know this plant? I’ve seen it before but can’t place it. Growing on a rocky stream side in part sun at about 5000 ft. It’s lovely.

Last weekend I had a chance to visit the Mt Baker Wilderness in Washington’s North Cascades. Follow along for a flora-heavy photo thread about Washington’s third highest peak.

Wandering Tattler (Tringa incana) is a spring and fall migrant seen on the Washington coast and occasionally in Puget Sound. I found this one while kayaking in the San Juan Islands a few years ago. Now that it's September, I'll be looking for these seasonal visitors again. They have a comical bouncy walk as they forage!

Me: hold still while I take a photo.
Bird: I'm just gonna take a nap here on these comfy barnacles.

friends, family, and alumni gathered at Milwaukie high school last night to remember their assistant track and football coach, Roland Aumueller. He was just 59 when it's believed he suffered a heart attack after a football game at Parkrose on Friday night.

Sowbread, Cyclamen hederifolium, is native from southern France to western Turkey, Mediterranean islands, farther north in Europe and in the Pacific Northwest.

In the wild flowers appear well before the foliage (seen here). Leaves resemble Hedera ivy leaves and so the plant is commonly called the ivy-leaved cyclamen.

@patl I get that. I loved and convos over there, but I’m finding more and more of my sports people. And some of the sports journalists have bots so I can get the latest on injuries, news, etc.

Part 2 of the milk way timelapse from Monday at Cape Blanco. I used my widest lens to get the waves and ships in frame. You can notice the shift to blue/cooler tones which I believe is due to the moon rising out of the frame.

Hmm, I wonder why people stopped “choosing” it in 1928. Rub salt in our wounds, why don’t you, Snoqualmie Railway Depot.

Dusty spider webs in the swordferns. That's how arid it's been this summer in the . They'll need to hang in there for a few more weeks before we get any real rain.

Is The Mountain Out? Yes (in Sumner), but maybe not for long.

It’s kind of wearing a hat, but the hat is weird. Kind of thin and poofy. There are a lot of clouds out today, so ymmv.
