We have reached peak crepe myrtle broom. The "grass" border is beginning to look a bit tired and is rapidly going over. A small lovely native goldenrod popped up and is making for very happy bees. My "little" lime hydrangea is looking more like a limelight after 3 years of increased sunshine and water. And lastly after giving up on my winter hobby of african violets, I am starting over and so in love with this edge of darkness!

A weekend full of dahlias! Had a wonderful time at the american dahlia society show in Portland, OR. Wrapped up with a wonderful tour of Hollyhill dahlias.

We survived the week of heat! Some pictures of my new dahlia beds I had to build out as I overbought a bit last year! And my driveway in it's crazy chaos of high summer. It is my most complete bed, provides flowers for around 9 months of the year with late blooming pineapple sage and early blueberries, and is always full of insects! Still working on updating pathways, and waiting on my iris to increase!

Some dahlias today! We are having some heat in the PNW and the dahlias love it! My first apple blossom bloom of the year, my first over akita after 2 years of trying, karma chocolate which is holding this gorgeous bloom for a long while now, and snowbound a large creamy white dahlia.

My crazy back patio. Someday I will paint the house and fix my patio cover, but for now I will just enjoy it with my plants!

I sprinkled a bag of wildflower seed mix on this little hill. Not very much of it came up, but I did get one lacy phacelia. The and I are delighted! I had no idea their pollen was purple too, but all those bees’ little baskets were dark purple.

I feel like I’m battling post-apocalyptic ruin but really it’s 5 years of neglect.

We still have one more stump to dig out and clear the middle of Ivy. Next years Project is to clear Ivy from the lower terrace.

Back in March, when I sowed these, I rather gleefully decided that figuring out where to plant them all was a future-me problem. Today, a sunny day that finally felt like spring, was the reckoning.
I spent the whole day in a springtime adhd haze, wandering around planting most of those starts plus some tubers. Notable plantings:
• I’m going to plant corn on the back terraces. I popped in a marigold at each of the staircase corners - they have a month to grow before I even plant the corn, so they’ll have a chance to shine.
• All the cosmos in a ring around the big fuchsia.
• All the mint relatives are going in the front bed by the road. It’s infested with layers and layers of blackberry roots, and I’m having a good time ripping them out of the soft wet soil, but I’m never going to get them all. So I’m planting catnip and Moldavian balm where I’ve pulled the worst blackberries. And I’m transplanting scores of white daffodils up there, too - they won’t mind being bushhogged in the fall if things get out of hand.
• Some American groundnut, apios americana, showed up in the mail today. (Thank you more recent past self?) I planted those at the top of the orchard, behind the shrubberies, where they can hopefully climb the fence.
• I decided it was warm enough to plant the mashua, tropaeolium tuberosum, that’s been hanging out in baggies in my glasses cabinet for a month. I was very excited when I ordered them from Cultivariable, but now (almost a year later) I’m not so sure our current climate will suit them. They don’t like days over 80, and we’re prone to heat domes now I guess? But I found them some afternoon shade, by the corn terraces.
• I got another surprise package today. WHAT THE FUCK past me ordered MORE STRAWBERRIES? I have so many already! But a quick read of the labels reminded me that two of them should taste like raspberries (raspyberries) and the other two (Marshall) have the most florid strawberry descriptions I’ve ever read. Carry on, then: I gave them half a raised bed.
