I'd always appreciated the easy wit of Clive James - thanks in part to sneakily watching late-night TV with my father - so I was both surprised and unsurprised to find out some years ago that he was also an accomplished writer and poet.
His collection, 'Sentenced to Life', places loss, guilt, and his impending death (leukaemia) to the fore, yet avoided self-pity and retained his humour.
I find it a poignant read when contemplating my own morality.

I consider it a point of great shame that despite having studied postgrad English Literature, I had virtually no knowledge of James Baldwin.
Thanks to a quote of his posted on Mastodon, I now have the opportunity to discover this incredible author and thinker. So I thought it only fitting that this week's #PoemOfTheWeek be from his #poetry.
