📢#OutNow in #OA: 'The #Poetic #Edda: A Dual-Language Edition' by Edward Pettit
đź“š This book is an edition and translation of one of the most important and celebrated sources of #OldNorse-#Icelandic #mythology and #heroic #legend, namely the #medieval #poems now known collectively as the #PoeticEdda or #ElderEdda.
Included are thirty-six texts, which are mostly preserved in #medieval #manuscripts, especially the thirteenth-century #Icelandic #codex traditionally known as the #CodexRegius of the #PoeticEdda.
The accompanying #translations, informed by the latest scholarship, are concisely annotated to make them as accessible as possible.
As the first open-access, single-volume parallel #OldNorse edition and English translation of the #PoeticEdda, this book will prove a valuable resource for students and scholars of #OldNorse #literature.

Been working on the Poetic Edda, and got to the tragedy of Brynhild, who is apparently Attila the Hun’s sister?
I guess that gives a pretty exact date for these tales, although not necessarily any indication of historical accuracy.
Don’t mess with a Valkyrie.

Thor: "I'll tell you my name,
I'm no criminal,
and I'm from a good family:
I am Odin's son, Meili's brother, and Magni's father, warrior of the gods, you're talking to Thor here!
Now I'll ask in turn, what is your name?"
The ferryman said: "Graybeard is my name, I rarely lie about that." —Anonymous, Poetic Edda, Harbarthsljoth
Except Greybeard is Odin, and he lies all the time about his name.

Skirnir: Marry my lord or I’ll torture you forever.
Not a good look for Frey and the Norse Gods. I guess there’s a reason this one doesn’t get retold a lot.

Working on the Poetic Edda. There are hints of myths we only know because Odin had a rap battle with a Giant.

“Brothers will fight one another
and kill one another,
cousins will break peace
with one another,
the world will be a hard place to live in.
It will be an age of adultery,
an age of the axe, an age of the sword,
an age of storms, an age of wolves,
shields will be cloven.
Before the world sinks in the sea,
there will be no man left
who is true to another.” —Voluspa 44, Poetic Edda
Got a copy of The Poetic Edda (translated by Jackson Crawford) for Yule.

While I edit #theartofgods, I get distracted. For instance, I am currently editing a version, a simplified version, of the #poeticedda for republishing as well. I would like to setup a store, of sorts on my book website to also sell versions of the Poetic Edda, which is one book that influenced my own story immensely.
