Two big issues jumped out:
Over use of -ly adverbs in narrative. This is weak writing and tells, rather than shows. It doesn't require too much rearranging to use a verb. My general rule is <4 -ly adverbs per page.
Point of view (POV). In short fiction keep to 1 or at most 2 POVs, and make it clear whose mind we're occupying.

I'm reading a book written from the third person omniscient PoV. It's a great book, but there are 3 writing styles I don't care for: 1. first person (dodged that), and 2. present tense (this is past tense), 3. omniscient (doh!). I find it just so ... It just takes me out of the story a bit. Also, it is really hard to do well though this author is skilled enough to make it only mildly annoying.
