@rooster Are you in the UK? I'm of an age to remember 'Round the Horne 'on BBC radio. They used a lot of #Polari which was, and in some quarters still is, the coded language for LBGT folk. The most rememberd line not Polari 'cos I've forgotten most, is "o hello I'm Julian and this is my friend Sandy" there is a whole web site which is a peek into the UK's under the radar history. Dec 27 - Happy St #Fabiola 's Day (no - nor had I). The name sounds like a #Polari exclamation of delight to me, but apparently she was a Roman noblewoman who is now the patron of the divorced, abused and widowed.

#Polari first came about in the theatre and the #gay #subculture in #Britain in the 1950s and 1960s.

Born largely out of a need for discretion in a potentially hostile environment, it provided a convenient shorthand for #LGBTQ communication and was popularised by #KennethWilliams in the #BBC #radio #comedy show #RoundTheHorne during the 1960's.

Hence, if an #LGBTQ speaker of Polari said to you that you had a 'dolly ecaf', they would be:

There are 79 minority languages recognised by The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

Some minority languages like Cornish and Basque are residues from a bygone era and are spoken by groups subsumed into larger nation states, but not Polari.

Polari is a secret language developed on the fringes of society. Although almost lost to history it has its fingerprints in queer culture, and the mainstream lexicon today.
