Dr. Racaniello emphasizes that with good vaccination programs, we can eradicate paralytic polio. But there’s no way to eradicate the virus entirely, because it’s so sneaky. There may be hundreds of asymptomatic #polio cases for every case of paralysis.

CDC update on global polio surveillance. (“Surveillance” = “counting people paralyzed by #polio” w/ sewage sampling secondary.) 76.5% of priority countries met surveillance indicator targets. Also 31%⬆️ in sewage sampling sites. Dr. Racaniello points out in many countries, there’re no sewage systems so no wastewater to collect! Also US not fully covered.
