The #oligarchs and #politicalparties advocating for MORE #oildrilling, for MORE use of #fossilfuels are operating from a simple premise:

Once the ocean currents, seas, forests are #beyondsalvage - once countless animal, insect, and plant species are #beyondrecovery - they assume we won't care anymore and they will be able to squeeze out the last few billions of $$ to be made on despoiling the world.

(They're already starting to say "It's too late; we should give up.")

Do not underestimate the toxic impact of #politicalDonations and #foreignMeddling.

Last we checked, #NationBuilder is #CloudFlare, so there is a great value proposition in #DDoS'ing #politicalParties, and then swooping in to save the day.

Also many parties at least in #Australia appear to be #astroTurf that don't offer anything truely different and appear to simply be trying to corner the market with a particular branding/#naming strategy.

How is diversity maintained in a competitive arena (be it Darwinian or political), when intuitively one would expect a single optimal strategy to succeed over all others? In simulations, stable clusters occur when there is an advantage to being different per se. Such models could explain #SexualDimorphism, #ImmunogeneticVariation, or even #PoliticalParties. But confirming this empirically is a challenge.

Let us guess, two parties?

In #Australia we had a good #votingSystem where #politicalParties had "#preferences". They'd chose where a vote for them went next.

It lead to a great wave of votes you had to see to appreciate.

Also negotiating to be high on a party's Preferences was itself a #democratic process that commentators had to discuss, sometimes at length. And by looking at a party's Preferences you'd quickly gauge where they stood on a range of issues.

But in 2017…

Yes. Which emerges when #politicalParties cannot overwhelms the #democraticProcess. A good start might be a selection process for a #Senate called #sortition. ;)
