You can read more about my family's history with the boarding school that my late grandfather attended on .

I archived photos I took when we visited the school.

If you can subscribe monthly at any amount, it would be a huge help! I lost quite a bit of subscribers over the pandemic and my patreon is my primary source of income.

Naples municipalist movement Massa Critica “Didn't run for the elections...The idea was to create a long term agenda for the city in a participatory way with public assemblies in squares in different neighbourhoods of Naples.” explained Maria Francesca De Tullio.

Most of adulthood, I assumed I'd condemned myself to monolingualism by avoiding studying Spanish in HS (notoriously bad teacher). In the tenants' mvmt the limits this imposes comes up often, paining me. A few months ago I learned about "comprehensible input," changing everything. Over the years, I'd dabbled with app learning, but never built the habit. Then this fall, members of TANC discussed but ultimately didn't come together around taking community college Spanish together. I decided to investigate self-directed learning methods.

Somewhere in the process of that search I stumbled upon a thread that mentioned Dreaming Spanish, a site & youtube channel that teaches learners beginning from zero knowledge, using the comprehensible input method. youtube.com/@DreamingSpanish
dreamingspanish.com/method
The premise, which has relatively substantial research backing & lots of anecdotal support, is that the fastest way to learn is to approximate how we learned our 1st language(s)—by receiving a huge amount of "input" (& nothing else, not grammar, not memorization, not speaking). We learn most from "input," as theory goes, when we understand most of it, ie when it's "comprehensible" to us. E.g. watching videos with illustrations, gestures, & slow speaking entirely in the language (or else through crosstalk, ie similar communication from a real speaker).

In the hardcore version of comprehensible input held by the Dreaming Spanish crew, you only need to take in progressively more complex, but consistently understandable, real use of the language by native speakers, up until an advanced level of understanding. After hundreds of hours, you have unconsciously learned the basics of the languages vocabulary, grammar, and sounds, only at which point do they recommend reading and conversation. Until then, its video, crosstalk, and eventually audio input.

At the same as I encountering comprehensible input, I was reading Jacques Ranciere's the Ignorant Schoolmaster, which describe an 19th century French teacher who taught Flemish students to learn French without knowing a word of Flemish—by handing them books in French.

I wasn't serious about this until a couple weeks ago, but now I'm hooked & watching an hour & a half of Spanish videos a day (at 1.5x speed, at least), largely replacing TV. I've already moved on to more difficult videos. Its way more engaging & easier than an app or class. If I'm able to stick to the learning plan I've set out, which has me increasing input as I become comfortable w/ just audio (podcasts around the house etc), & if the timeline laid out by the program is anywhere near accurate, I'll be conversational within the year. Unbelievable.
