@alexmakin The framers of the US Constitution were as scared of mob rule as of tyranny, and they created the electoral college as a sort of mid-point; they envisaged a president being elected by a small caucus of impartial, wise, judicial and experienced citizens. But almost immediately it was seen not to work that way; electors were never independent, and of course the winner-takes-all votes (from all states but two: Maine and Nebraska) dirties the entire business. Even John Adams, one of the most experienced of all the writers of the constitution (and the second president) began to call for abandoning the college. But by then it was too ingrained. Andrew Jackson (7th president) also called unsuccessfully for its abandonment; this being one of the few occasions that Jackson didn't get his way.

A few years ago I determined that theoretically it would be possible for a president to be elected with as little as about 21% of the popular vote.

The Australian political system is very far from perfect ( well, no system can be ) but the American system is demonstrably the worst. From their voting system to the management of elections to the Electoral College, it seems as though the entire system has been set up to show the rest of the world how not to do it.
