This is a Texas powdered skipper (Systasea pulverulenta). It's a skipper, not the most stunning butterfly, but it is my 590th identified insect species. Always nice to find a lifer Lepidoptera, and even though it's still hot out it's nice to see some signs of fall coming.

Out *very* early this morning to water things before it got too hot; parents were taking "first day of school" pictures of their kids on their front steps, and the Smooth Asters are starting to pop! There will be a zillion of these little flowers opening on multiple plants in the next weeks.

This Atlantis Fritillary was a nice little treat to see in the garden the other day. I see lots of monarchs, swallowtail, and cabbage moths but these are a bit rarer of a sighting.

Yesterday I was treated to two types of hummingbird sightings: a female broad-billed hummingbird (which you can see out of focus in my previous post), and a Hummingbird Clearwing. While I didn't get a great photo of the first, the second gave me a much better opportunity.

This Pearl Crescent butterfly's beautiful orange and black wings matched the sulfur on the right so perfectly, I was lucky to snap off a shot before it flitted to the yellow cosmo on the right.
