Umberto Eco died on this day, in 2016. He was was a polymath of towering cleverness.

Eco had a complex relationship with culture, characterized by a deep curiosity and fascination with the ways in which meaning is created and transmitted and interpreted through signs and symbols.

When he died, my best friends called me to express their sympathies .

#OTD, Nov 14, in 1716. the polymath Wilhelm Gottfried Leibniz passed away. He was one of the greatest thinkers of the 17th & 18th centuries, the last "universal genus".

He wrote works on philosophy, theology, ethics, politics, law, history, linguistics, and physics and technology.

He contributed to biology, medicine, and geology. A true polymath.
