Home-baked bread from last night's celebration of the Feast of Grapes (it went very nicely with the wine). Today begins the ten-day celebration of the Mysteries, Ariadne's Tribe's Minoan version of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Good times!

As a lifelong Polytheist, I've introduced myself to dozens of different gods, though I only include 8 in the core of my practice. Just like with humans, I'm closer to some than others, but it starts with getting to know them.
I've learned that the best, easiest, quickest way to start connecting with a god is just their name. Say their name, a lot. Learn any historical epithets, which reveal clues about their nature, or construct your own epithet if there aren't any.
Say their name. Light a candle and say it. Burn some incense and say it. Go outside and feel the ground beneath you, the air on your face, and just say their name. Everything else will be presented in due time, once they're called.

Perusing the on-order list at my local library, and, as happens regularly, there's a good chunk of Christian books. And I find myself increasingly frustrated. I keep thinking about Kaye Boesme's recent plea for more polytheists to get their writing into the world and the opening of/impetus for Chelydoreus' new blog series on polytheistic theology. There is a lack.

It's not that my library doesn't order broadly pagan books. They have plenty of witchcraft and occult books and some of the more reconstruction-oriented texts. It's that there just aren't as many books on modern polytheist theology and practice as a broad phenomenon. It's frustrating and a little melancholy, but it's also invigorating. Think what we could write! Think what could be shared and grown and built!

I've written a few books! Sometimes it still feels a little surreal, that I'm a published author - even after all these years.

Which practices have contributed the most to your personal spiritual growth?

For me, it's the following:

- Setting aside time each day for prayer, the reading of sacred texts, and contemplation

- Sticking to a consistent meditation schedule

- Researching the works of theologians, mystics, and skeptics alike

- Keeping a journal of all of my spiritual questions, concerns, wishes, and experiences

- Letting signs and synchronicities inspire me, but letting discernment guide my actions.

- Embracing the ecstatic and confounding nature of the Mysteries with wonder and love

@Cat_LeFey This is why I like the model of Butler, it transcends the soft and hard versions of polytheism and negates them, to my mind at least.

The terms "hard" and "soft" polytheism are relatively new in paganism. Scholars of ancient polytheism started using the terms in the early 2000s to differentiate these large disparities in ancient belief systems that before were lumped together. Naturally, pagans follow academics, and I believe it was Greer from ADF that first popularized the terms in modern paganism.
These words were meant to be a quick summation of how you see the gods, just a general idea. Instead of having to write out a whole essay on how you specifically think of the gods as beings, you could just slap this handy label on it.

They are not meant to be diametrically opposed, and therefore constantly debated.

They are not meant to be an entire identity.

You are not meant to choose either/or, it is a spectrum, and you might only lean one way.

Our labels are just simple, quick ways to connect with others. Because modern polytheists are so widely diverse, we have these little phrases we use to more easily talk to each other, no more than that.

I'm back on my bullshit (posting about Cicero) let's look at some Stoic arguments for the existence of the gods.

First, the argument from miracles: Obviously the gods exist because they keep showing up and intervening in reality! It leans pretty heavy on anecdotes but honestly I kind of love it. (Source: penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E as usual)

Pagans of all types and stripes are welcome to follow and interact with me, so long as they're not some kind of bigot: Polytheistic pagans, monotheistic/duotheistic pagans, henotheistic pagans, atheist pagans, etc. all have a place at my feast table.

I also welcome folks who identify outside of the pagan umbrella! Interfaith solidarity is huge for me, especially in times like these. It's often through interfaith dialogue that we all realize that we share more similarities than differences, even if we hold those differences to be quite important. But, at the end of the day, we're all just people out searching for answers on a quest for Truth.

Epag Day 3: Happy birthday Set!

-----------

O Set, Rebel coming in the night.
Bones of iron before Whom the sky does shake,
Who sends the storm above.
They say “He Who doesn’t care about the law”,
yet righteous swords do glint and arrows fly.
He Who fells isfet, poised atop the Barque of Ra,
outstretched hands fend off A/p/e/p upon the hour.
Heru takes the Shield and You the Sword, ensure our victory!
That which torn apart can fight as One against a common goal.
Abhorrent or Beloved, each in its stride,
a time for all, a place to rest, a day to be.
And be this day indeed, take up the mantle,
You of Thunderous Sky and Shifting Sand.
Be sharp as flint and swift as bird,
stealth of fish yet strong as raging bull.
He Who loves the fight, Who holds his head on high,
Who welcomes dissonance abroad yet beats the drum
compelling, every sound yields on His might.
I stand with You, Lord of Blades and Power,
my bonds undone, I will not bow to evil.
