Toward the end of his life, after having resisted (for want of a better term) for about 50 years, and kept alive through various "tricks" (, , ironic use of classical forms and citations, ... all devices which Bernstein once nicknamed " refreshers"), Stravinsky, whose personal beliefs were becoming increasingly religious & mystic, finally caved in to and techniques, albeit in an idiosyncratically Stravinskian way...

For English speakers wishing to engage further with 's , there's a brilliant & enthusiastic (in one word, Bernsteinian!) introduction to "L'Histoire du Soldat" (and to the 's work and the significance of in modern musical discourse) in the last segment of Leonard 's Norton lectures at Harvard - which deserve to be watched in full, as to me at least they have represented a crucial step in my understanding and love of music!
