Simeon Ananiades was born in #Samsun in 1902 and was a student of #Anatolia College at Merzifon in Ottoman #Turkey. On Feb 12, 1921, #Kemalist general Jemil Jahid accompanied by hundreds of soldiers entered the college and began searching for guns and ammunition. They found neither. However, they did find a map of the historic region of #Pontus. As a result, Ananiades was arrested and later hanged along with other members of the college faculty.

Pontus (Gr: Πόντος) is the name of an historic region situated on the Turkish Black Sea coast and was home to a large #Greek population. Prior to the genocide these #Greeks self-identified as Romaioi (Gr: Ῥωμαῖοι) or Rûm, in other words descendants of the Eastern #Roman (or #Byzantine) Empire. Like other regions within Ottoman #Turkey, the #Greeks of #Pontus were subjected to a genocidal campaign.
