Interesting idea for border disease surveillance that isnβt disruptive to travellers: sample the wastewater of incoming international flights.
In the article, the US look to be considering flights from China, but if successful it could be applied to flights from any destination.
Friday update for #NewZealand's covid in wastewater dashboard π³πΏπ©.
Rapid increase in wastewater quantities alongside increasing case numbers.
New variants have toppled BA.5 which had been dominant for the last few months.
Check out data for your catchment via the map at https://poops.nz

Interesting to compare wastewater with case data. Wastewater is only collected 1 or 2/week from each site, so wastewater data isn't 'as smooth' as average case data (see Dunedin). Wastewater levels can be noisy - especially the smaller catchments. Increase in many sites compared to last week, giving an overall increase nationally. Samples from this week are being collected, shipped and/or analysed ! #neverending

Fixed a bug with the new https://poops.nz domain that was blocking the geolocation from working... So if you're in NZ, tap the map and the geolocate button, and you're in a wastewater catchment tested last week then the local results should pop up.
Not totally happy with the onboarding for this just yet so if anyone has suggestions do chip in. #poopsnz
Not every day you get to launch the domain π© https://poops.nz/ - the new home for our π³πΏ #NewZealand #Aotearoa wastewater surveillance programme.
As the number of new variants found in wastewater continues to increase, we've changed the variant analysis view to show which variants were found at each of our sentinel sites in the last two weeks. The result reminds me of a 1980s arcade game. We'll switch from #nzpoops -> #poopsnz
