I'm curious to learn if there are any real world usecases to have #email devices / clients in a mixed configuration, meaning some check for mail with #imap and other clients check the same mail account with #POP3. Also a good thing to test polling with Mastodon :-)

So how do we start automating things?

Well, automation can be one of two styles (or both) - push or pull/poll based.

From an existing-art perspective, email can be delivered via a file-based or protocol based system. #IMAP and #POP3 are two protocols, and #mbox and #Maildir are two file-based (and clients *may* take delivery from IMAP/POP3 and store them as local files as well).

@stickfog https://mailinabox.email/ is supposedly good; I haven't tried it myself. Putting #Linux on a low-end VPS and setting up for example #Dovecot (for #IMAP #POP3) plus #Postfix or #Exim (#SMTP) with #SpamAssassin (spam filtering) and a #LetsEncrypt cert isn't particularly hard. Adding #SPF #DKIM #DMARC for reliable outgoing mail isn't really difficult either per se, but takes a little more care. I recommend using a VPS host with full virtualization (not e.g. OpenVZ containers) and snapshots.

Besides passively capturing IMAP, SMTP, and POP email, the malware also backdoors routers with a remote access Trojan that allows the attackers to download files and run commands of their choice. The backdoor also enables attackers to funnel data from other servers through the router, turning the device into a covert proxy for concealing the true origin of malicious activity.

“This type of agent demonstrates that anyone with a router who uses the Internet can potentially be a target—and they can be used as proxy for another campaign—even if the entity that owns the router does not view themselves as an intelligence target,” researchers from security firm Lumen’s Black Lotus Labs wrote. “We suspect that threat actors are going to continue to utilize multiple compromised assets in conjunction with one another to avoid detection.”

The researchers said the campaign, dubbed Hiatus, has been operating since at least last July. So far, it has primarily hit end-of-life DrayTek Vigor models 2960 and 3900 running an i386 architecture. These high-bandwidth routers support virtual private network connections for hundreds of remote workers. To date, roughly 100 routers have been infected, which is about 2 percent of the DrayTek 2960 and 3900 routers exposed to the Internet. @protonmail @thunderbird I've used #ProtonMail for years, but its complete inability to integrate with my #Thunderbird #POP3 accounts, thus requiring me to only interact with it via website, remains a major PITA & THE reason it can never be my primary email account. If it cannot be in TB, it cannot be of major use to me.

No, i will never use IMAP, ergo, ProtonBridge is n/a for me.
