I don't understand the "scary monsters" angle except as a fictional concept, mostly related to kids, which is not really my thing. But I suppose those lines are entirely blurred these days, which is a shame. #popcryptid

I revisited Tumblr, where I follow #popcryptid #cryptid stuff and I have no more interest in it. It’s either art or memes. Or it’s the dude that posts “cryptid of the day” stuff that’s inaccurate. I just don’t like this pop stuff anymore but I still like the folklore and subject area. There is not much thoughtful and interesting stuff out there IMO. I’m jaded.

Revisiting this book from 1999 where the authors made a valiant effort to remove every occult or paranormal inkling from the subjects. Notably, there are no Dogman or mothman in these pages. It’s all depicted as a sober endeavor, even to the point of absurdity as “merbeings” are suggested to be “sea apes”.

It’s pretty interesting to see two camps of #cryptid thinking: a few left of the old school (Shuker, Arment) who think they need to be entirely zoological in scope (which is absurd) and on the other side, those that suggest or even demand a paranormal explanation (Godfrey, Redfern) (also absurd). Coleman (over time) goes where the wind blows.

Clearly modern #popcryptid ideas of #cryptozoology embrace the weirdness and are inextricably married to it.

Regardless, this is the new #cryptids worldview. The line between real and fiction is entirely eliminated and people will believe in the reality of what was clearly a manufactured creature.
