One of the banes of my shady garden is porcelain berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipendunculata). Also known as false grape, it has a very similar appearance to wild grape, but it is a vigorous, invasive species that spreads rapidly if not removed. Removed this and other young plants today.

@Karen5Lund A job for #SuperStewards armed with #hedgeTrimmers.. Most likely a lot of #porcelainBerry. Doubt there's any #NativeGrape.

@atthenius I've been trained to distinguish #porcelainBerry from #nativeGrape by the core (unfortunately if you screw up its too late) and the bark. Native grape has a flaking papery bark. Older porcelain berry bark can get flakey but native grape is flakey everywhere. Porcelain berry has a white core when cut. Native grape has a black core. Native grape is pretty unusual.
Up at northern tip of Manhattan in #Inwood today cutting invasive vines as a newly minted Super Steward.
And I checked with iNaturalist to be sure what I was cutting was #PorcelainBerry and not native grape.
