In case anyone interested missed the answer: the mystery sound I posted yesterday was a female porcupine rustling the quills on the tail before mating (as it all seems consensual I assume she is signaling receptivity.) I shot it in the open zoo behind a Chiang Mai temple. 29 secs into the video the rustling. 33 to 44 secs a bit raw so don’t watch if that offends you. Before and after there’s a lot of very sweet nuzzling. #nature #porcupines

Unlike European #porcupines, New World porcupines (Erethizontidae) like to climb trees. The woods here in upstate New York are full of them. (View the image full-sized to see how high up he/she is!)

Much to my delight, one has just moved into my shed for the winter. I removed some tires I had stored in there, after remembering my grandfather once showing me a photo of his camper trailer with the tires chewed to ribbons by porcupines.
