@Mizokaya I actually legitimately prefer the #PortableComputer form-factor, they're repairable, upgradable, use standard parts (laptops fail that on most accounts other than the drives and RAM these days) and maintainable.

My main case for mobility is emergencies, so having to wheel-along a pelican case knockoff is acceptable (bike trailers are great on the go, as are racks on the back).

@lanodan @mia @hj Suitcase computer remains preferable, modern thinkpads are hard to maintain and upgrade.

A standard 100~120/220~240v input socket means you can use any given portable battery pack.

Anything else just gives manufacturers free rein to rip-off customers.

Has anybody successfully repaired the Sharp 640x480 LCD panel on a Compaq portable 486c?
I have three of them, all with dead displays. They all appear to have leaking electrolytic capacitors. I tried recapping one, but it didn’t come back.

Repairing another Compaq Portable 486 power supply that failed due to leaky capacitors. This one was by far the worst. The leakage caused the PCB to char due to the current path formed by the electrolyte. I had to grind out the damaged area and add bodge wires around the traces that were removed.

OK, here we go with #TurboPascal3. The printed cradle works so far, the EPROM too. One small problem, the 9kB RAM-disc is to small to hold the complete .pas + .com file together 😅​ So I have to wait patient for the main accu for using the !! 120 k !! RAM expansion.

It took like 4 or 5 hours BUT I RECAPPED THE PSU IN MY TANDY AND FINALLY THE SCREEN WORKS

I *SCREAMED* when I saw the BIOS message. I have had this machine for like four years and have not been able to use it because the PSU was far out of spec and the screen would not work, and I didn't have the skills/tools at the time to recap it. Finally it LIVES!
