The perepat trees (Sonneratia alba) are flowering all along the coast of Port Dickson. They’re the pioneer mangrove species around here, closest to the water. They hold the land down against the sea.

The past 10 days, we've been choking on intense gas smells drifting on the wind. It's sometimes gag-inducing: sulphur, rotten eggs, or if you're SEAsian, think fermented durian mixed with... dead rats

From the back, she looked like she was wearing little amulets of light.
I walked round to the front and found her trunk like a heart split wide open to the sea. Still, she was solid as a rock, and soft enough to grow over rock.

It was low tide, and the small bit of shore in front of the tree was revealed. I went down there – it was like standing on the front porch of my home. A porch the sea was coming for, the tree being the house. I turned back to look at her, and from that point of view I finally understood the mystery of those exposed roots...

Oil storage tank caught fire on 11 Mar ‘23 at Hengyuan #Refinery in #PortDickson, #Malaysia
2nd fire since 2020. Suspected lightning strike but why would it catch fire unless the tank isn’t properly sealed?
We live 200m from the fence. Since #Hengyuan took over from Shell in 2018 our neighborhood has been hit hard with noise, light, air pollution.
@zedecksiew and I now spend 30% of our time organizing against #bigoil.
