The origin of azulejo is Egyptian, but it was the Arabs who brought the technique to the Iberian Peninsula, around the year 1500. By the way, the word azulejo comes from “al-zulaich” — which means something like polished stone.
Muslim works in southern Spain were the gateway to Europe for this type of cladding. An art that was brought by the Moors and incorporated into Mudejar architecture.✍️
