Portulaca grandiflora, rose moss, is in the same family as purslane. Unlike purslane, it is not edible. The genus name, Portulaca, means "little door". It refers to how the fruits in this genus opens up to disperse the tiny seeds.

The species epithet, grandiflora, is somewhat easy to deduce. It means that has large flowers!
