The Fauves, led by Matisse, van Dongen, Derain and others. It was an old boy's club, right? No. A new exhibition demonstrates how women were central to the movement—as artists, dealers, and inspiration. https://news.artnet.com/art-world/fauves-kunstmuseum-basel-2352990

Five artists explored the landscape along the river Seine northwest of Paris in the late 1800s. As their paths crossed during this pivotal time, van Gogh, Seurat, Signac, Bernard, and Angrand discovered new motifs to inspire artistic experiments, forged friendships & ignited feuds, and encouraged & critiqued one another’s work. https://www.artic.edu/highlights/58/five-artists-along-the-seine?fbclid=IwAR3nmAxGb2UDW3xW4dPFiR0JXwrI1IgMcWSLb7hUSZTOfgRnvpXaFhQR70s

They enjoyed a mutually-inspiring friendship from the moment they met as young emigres in Paris in 1905, and a host of 20th century artists drew inspiration from the creative energy that burned between them. The friendship between Picasso & Stein in the Parisian avant-garde scene of the beginning of the 20th century created a lasting legacy in all of the arts. https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/gertrude-stein-and-pablo-picasso-the-language-of-friendship?locale=en

"Place des Lices, St. Tropez," Paul Signac, 1893.
Signac was a student of Seurat and after his teacher's death, deserted the hustle and bustle of Paris for a quiet life in a small town on the Mediterranean. While still pointillist, he began modifying his style, using mosaiclike squares rather than dots, and using different media than the usual oils.
Another perfect summer scene!
From the Carnegie Museum fo Art, Pittsburgh, PA.

No idea if this will be of interest to anyone else but I thought it might be nice to share it rather than leave it mouldering in a folder!

Painting. It's a way to unburden yourself, the doctor explained. Near the end of his life, Dr. Gachet urged van Gogh to resume painting again, and the result was truly frenetic in the 70 days before his death. https://hyperallergic.com/832113/the-doctor-who-inspired-van-goghs-final-paintings/?fbclid=IwAR0sVCkBOZcubVKDqnGeipUbld6E-N_nuAXNm2jgt0eBBXxF57YQkJ1AaAs

After Vincent encouraged colleagues Gauguin & Bernard to exchange portraits of one another with him, he was shocked when Gauguin’s painting arrived. He felt Gauguin appeared "ill and tormented." Hence the infamous invitation to come paint with van Gogh in Arles, where Gauguin could "eat, walk with me in some beautiful countryside... and in a word, thoroughly enjoy himself.”

Sunflowers were his joy, stars became glimmers of heaven. Cypresses were Vincent's symbol of resilience & fortitude. An exhibition at the Met spotlights for the first time why those trees became an obsession for him and reveals the back story behind his long-standing interest. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20230612-from-the-starry-night-to-a-wheatfield-van-goghs-darkest-symbol

“The Docks of the Port of Bastia” Auguste Herbin, French, 1907
Before settling in Paris, where he first joined the Impressionists and later the Fauves, Herbin attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lille from 1900 onwards. His studio was situated directly next to Braque's and Picasso's, allowing a close study of Cubism. In 1917 he moved on to an abstract, geometric phase before gradually discovering Constructivism.

His was an imaginary world, yet he paved the way for the avant-garde. Teaching himself to paint, Rousseau devised his own methods of creation that were a far cry from the academic traditions of mimetic painting. He forged a new path of artistic freedom that was soon taken up with vigor by other artists outside the establishment’s privileged circle. https://www.christies.com/features/rousseau-jungle-painting-les-flamants-12752-7.aspx?sc_lang=en&cid=EM_EMLcontent04144C47Section_A_Story_1_0&COSID=41687561&cid=DM491348&bid=350248585#fid-12752

I know I’ve been slacking with my #OldMasters posts I promised and kept up with for a good while. Been so busy with #diy #homeimprovement #carpentry and all.
But here is Henri Martin. “Small Pergola”
He loved to paint pergolas and similar structures, and I don’t blame him. It’s such a fantastic delineation of space. Somehow a quality of timelessness and eternity pervades an outdoor structure like that. I don’t know how to describe it, but there it is.
