🤦 It looks like I missed the bit on the website where it says they'll charge £0.16 if you drop off "Royal Mail Tracked 24" at the rather than booking a free collection 🙄 .

One of my favorite art projects in the area. I can't believe it's been running for 10 years and that Nakata-san is now 89!!!

(the article focuses on writing to dead people, but the way I understand the project, it's really about writing to whoever you can't actually write to - people who are gone from your life in general)

Random nostalgia

Nice to hold
If you break it
Consider it sold"

Sticker in the old days in the . Next to racks of souvenirs made of pottery/glass anything that would make a satisfying smash when dropped onto hard floors.

Finished my second of the summer, Women of the Post by @joshundasanders. It’s my historical fiction read, part of my ongoing quest to read anything about the , and a rare moment when I actually keep up with something brand-new. The 6888th is finally getting attention for its work during World War II as Sanders brings to life the African-American women who sorted hundreds of thousands of pieces of delayed mail between the European front and the United States. @AHAHistorians

The IT scandal continues to offer opportunities for outrage at the treatment of innocent sub-postmasters, the impunity of the managers & IT firms involved and the general lack of interest in failures in the - this is an issue that goes to the heart of so much that is wrong in a country where the interests of outweigh social justice (or any justice for that matter)!

A sad & sorry take well explored here by Marina Hyde

The scandal is NOT OVER until all those who were in charge in Fujitsu and Post Office face charges and spend time in prison.

Guardian opinion piece on the UK scandal, by Marina Hyde
theguardian.com/commentisfree/
'in which totally innocent subpostmasters, the very backbone of villages and communities, were turned into criminals to cover up the fact that the Post Office’s Horizon computer system didn’t work properly. Each was told by the that no one else had any problems with the system. Vast sums were effectively looted from them to make up accounting shortfalls, before they were prosecuted anyway'

The Post Office cover-up is still under way. The inquiry is hearing evidence, except on the days it can’t, because the Post Office is continually failing to hand over evidence … like the discovery of a document proving that Post Office investigators were ordered to group suspected subpostmasters in racial categories such as “negroid types” and “dark-skinned European types”. This advice was still in use in 2011.

Not really a surprise, is it, to see just how much the Post Office Department during World War I was just firmly opposed to anything and everything Emma Goldman said, published, or mailed.

I only have a few days on this trip to explore Record Group 28 ( records, of course), so we’ll see how this goes. But it’s very exciting these days to get any time at all in for research.

is over, it was worth a trip:

There was a good talk about the scandal, look out for the drama coming soon: itv.com/presscentre/presscentr, and the book sounds good: bathpublishing.com/products/th.

@khae talked about non-IT "denials of service".

@ChrisTruncer talked about 2 groups catching the low-hanging fruit.

Ian Thornton-Trump gave an entertaining talk about "good"

In things you couldn’t make up the are blaming the non-disclosure of their nasty little racial profiling scheme, on the disclosure software.
If you are in & you are unfamiliar with the scandal see below, an egregious failure of project management that saw users actually imprisoned, a stain on all of us. Be better, people

Blanking DMV. I'm there ten till four, they close at five. They could let me in, keep me waiting an hour, and still close on time. But they won't even let me in. Typical New York. Wants to quit early.

I’m in the midst of planning a research trip for the project and I keep finding myself wanting to do a deep dive on the pneumatic tube delivery system the Post Office attempted in the early twentieth century.
