In the spring we had some old, sprouting potatoes that were no longer edible. For fun, I planted one potato in a 20 liter pot of soil. Other things have already grown in this soil in the last year. I added a bit of garden compost.
Today I dug these up, 1.7 kg potatoes.

Lithunian kitchen equipment: The potato processor. Essential for making zeppelini and potato pancakes 🥔

migiris.lt/index.php?page=tark

It's a fairly sturdy piece of kit with a heavy flywheel in it. Makes quick work of any potato.

Today's haul!

I planted 0.4 kilograms of Russian Banana seed potatoes in 3 square meters of my ainneor. Today's yield was 22.9 kilograms! That's crazy! I cannot believe how productive this variety planted in a traditional ainneor is!

I now know how to grow potatoes. Now I need to learn how to store them and how to eat A LOT of them.

Wildfire smoke, be damned! I'm digging spuds, today!

This is last 3 square meters of the 5 sq. meter ainneor (lazy bed) I planted with potatoes in late April.

This variety is a fingerling potato called "Russian Banana." It is supposed to be excellent for potato salads.

Usually, the deer leave the foliage alone but they have been munching away at it for the last few weeks. (Lots of hot, dry weather, here.)

I was having a conversation with a friend on becoming a potato and remembered making

Today I learned:

1. Peru has an International Potato Center (IPC).
2. Today, Peru imports thousands of tons of frozen fries from America - result of politics, trade, and capitalism.

Potato originated in Peru and embedded in it's original culture.

Now, we have french fries, a delicious health hazard, made an Internationally popular food beyond France and America.

Personally, I like potatoes in roasted or boiled or cooked with spices. Grown out of fries crave.

Made a mistake: Told a friend about the really tasty low-histamine potato & white onion bread I baked. She's coming over next week, and now she wants to taste the bread as well… But his one won't last as long (we will finish it tomorrow). So I will have to bake a new one.
The only problem: It will be >30 °C next week, I'd prefer not to turn on the oven

@gardening @plants
Gather round nerds, I’ve got a little update on my quest to save and replant . (Gonna try to use this hashtag for later reference!)
This evening I harvested the berries from the potatoes growing in the meadow terraces. Those are the ones in the jar on the left! The jar on the right is all the berries from the two much larger patches in the garden. I don’t know what the difference is, but potatoes seem to absolutely love the terrace, so that’s where I’ll grow them next year.
The jar on the right was picked over the last several weeks, as the little green berries started coming loose from the plants. Some of them are starting to ripen! Second shot is a comparison photo of some just picked green berries next to some half ripe berries.
For this project, I’ve picked Cultivariable and Joseph Lofthouse as my two experts.
cultivariable.com/instructions

lofthouse.com/botanical-potato
Lofthouse has simpler, more down to earth explanations, and CV gives a much more comprehensive overlook of the process. What I’m gonna do next is leave them out until they get gross and squishy, squish out the insides, rinse off the pulp, and then ferment the slimy seed-water with a pinch of yeast and sugar.
At that point I’ll need to decide if I’ve done enough, like rough’n’ready Lofthouse, or if I want to do the optional bleach sterilization CV offers. I think at that point it becomes a philosophical decision: am I trying to grow out a bunch of plants to pick the best tubers to grow a whole crop from? Or am I just going to grow them out and harvest each year’s berries, to work on the whole genepool?
I don’t know! Any thoughts?
Ps Cultivariable says I should have upwards of 10,000 seeds there. I’m a little daunted!

@gardening a little more from the today. I harvested a lot of seeds: a few more berries in the holding bowl, a bunch of seeds, a bunch of California seeds. And I dissected a few of my last and ripest Uralskiy Ranniy and harvested their seeds. Not a lot of seeds in the last little fruits, but enough to try the technique.
Plus another five quarts of fermented dill ! Whew.

And here’s todays Serious Nerdery.
I’ve grown a huge crop of berries. We usually use “seed potatoes,” which are literally the nicest looking potatoes from last harvest, and plant those to grow clones of the previous plant, right? But sometimes the flowers make berries with fertile seed, and you can save and grow that seed out just like tomatoes. Remember, they’re both solanums!
My potatoes are covered in flowers and berries. Not just one variety - it’s all of them. Not just one location - all three potato patches have berries. It’s not every plant, but at least one plant of each variety has berries, plural.
All the stuff I autistically skimmed over the winter said berries weren’t common, so when I realized how many little fruits I had, I went back to the research. It turns out we’ve had very good weather for potato seed! Our cool, not too dry summer has let the plants keep blooming and setting seed for way longer than usual.
So, im going to keep these until they get squishy, then mash them up in some water to get the seeds out, kind of like tomato seed.
Here’s a very practical website with a little info: lofthouse.com/botanical-potato
And if you want more after that, *here* is the tl;dr massive infodump. It’s fascinating if you’re in the mood!
