A new topobathymetric lidar dataset for the Potomac River from the #USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) is available for download. Uses: estimating concentrations of contaminant plumes; engineering for bridges and roads; mapping aquatic habitats for biological assessments; and flood mapping.

My neighbor sent me this photo of a large gar (approximately 30") he saw while out on his dinghy. Unfortunately, the gar is injured and missing a big portion of its tail and was not swimming well. Can't think of what would cause this? Prop strike? Entanglement in fishing line? Has anyone seen this before?

I usually post photography, but years ago I made an #effigy for a regional #BurningMan event called #PlayaDelFuego. I stretched the usual pony theme to be a #seahorse, gathered #driftwood along the #PotomacRiver to make it, and the finished piece was 12’ tall (3.7m), 15’ (4.5m) on the wood pile. You can see friends and me (long hair, black outfit, open back) light the "pony."

Early morning is my favorite time to be on the water. This picture was taken a few years ago on the upper Potomac River. The flat water before the break can hold smallmouths when they are in feeding mode. Looking forward to spring and chasing smallies again.

In late summer and early fall l like to wet wade the Upper Potomac. This trip I decided to only bring my 6wt to practice casting bigger flies. Lots of bad casts that day, but the smallies were in a forgiving mood.
